Tooth Brushing

girlbrushingCleaning your child’s mouth actually starts before the first tooth shows up!  No toothbrush or toothpaste in these pre-teeth days.  Instead, wipe down your baby’s gums at least twice a day with a soft moistened washcloth.

When those first teeth begin to show, switch to a small, soft headed tooth brush.  No need for toothpaste just yet.  Simply gently brush the teeth with the moistened toothbrush.  You can introduce a pea-sized amount of toothpaste when your child turns one.

You should continue to brush your child’s teeth until he or she is old enough to hold the brush.  After that, until around age six, you are the brushing supervisor making sure your child properly cleans those all-important teeth.
